Sophia Revis, a Samford University sophomore and sociology and communication studies double major, has spent the spring semester studying abroad in London. While residing at Samford’s Daniel House, she completed a unique internship in the Parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. For Revis, her semester abroad was more than just an academic pursuit; it was a transformative experience that expanded her horizons, forged lifelong connections and deepened her understanding of the global landscape.
Having walked through the corridors of power at the Parliamentary estate, Revis described a profound sense of vitality. "I felt truly alive," she said, reflecting on her internship experience. "I've never been this excited about an internship before."
According to Revis, her semester in London has been a pivotal chapter in her academic journey. Navigating cobblestone streets across the pond, she, like many Samford students before her, found herself immersed in a world of opportunities and challenges, each moment shaping her perspective in profound ways.
"I'm grateful for my time abroad because it's strengthened my career calling, gave me lifelong friends and showed me the international aspects of the legal field," Revis said. "Being in London has exposed me to many life-changing experiences that I never would've had if I had stayed in Birmingham this semester."
Reflecting on her growth during her study abroad, Revis emphasized the development of confidence and independence. Much of these skills were accumulated during her internship where she has been serving as a Parliamentary intern and caseworker for Gillian Keegan, secretary of state for education of the United Kingdom.
"I have loved everything about working at Parliament," she said. “Throughout the past three months, my internship has become one of my favorite things about studying abroad. I love going on constituency visits, writing press briefings, organizing campaign emails and all of the small daily tasks in between. Through Gillian and working in Parliament, I've learned more about politics and what goes on behind the scenes. Every day in Parliament is exciting and I'm so grateful for my absolutely incredible experience working.”
After a long day of serving the people of Great Britain, Revis would return home to the Daniel House, Samford’s flagship study abroad program.
"The Daniel House isn't just four walls and a roof. It's a place where friendships are formed and memories are made," said Revis.
From cozy movie nights to impromptu dance lessons, the Daniel House plays the part of both a home and a classroom to the students and faculty who travel to its refined street in Kensington.
